Ten things from X Media Lab Bath

There are not many top UK digital and entertainment conferences held outside of London but here was one. X Media Lab at the famous Assembly Rooms (and Roman Baths for previous night reception) brought a collection of top speakers and thinkers from film, TV, music and internet businesses to Bath.

Here are ten things we took from the event...

  • Julian Treasure's power and influence of sound - open plan offices lead to 66% reduction in productivity - www.juliantreasure.com
  • The very amusing Baratunde Thurston talking about "not just checking in" on social media but creating and "upgrading our own humanity" and of course How to be Blackwww.baratunde.com/
  • Martyn Ware's 'breathing' tree, Rome Reborn and announcing 3D soundscape London 2012 project for Millennium Bridge - http://illustriouscompany.co.uk/
Baratunde
  • The phrase "cultural algorithm, right" from Howard Goldkrand - www.soundlab.org/
  • The staggering number of southwest-based digital projects, investors, start-ups, analysts and writers
  • Drinking on wobbly Roman paving at Roman Baths while listening to Ed Vaizey and trying to get Bafta videogame winners out of Ian Livingstone - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Livingstone
Roman Baths
  • Poonacha Machaiah's short film about Bangalore flower market and the mobile phone (he wants to be a director like his Bollywood business partner Shekhar Kapur) - www.qyuki.com/
  • Meeting the excellent and very clever Dr JoAnn Kuchera-Morin who talks about the need for art in Science. She "blew the mind" of a BBC Focus journalist
  • Wearing 3D glasses to watch Dale Herigstad's vision of 3D projected TV manipulation and control. Weird.
  • Drinking in the bar afterwards - talking 80s music with Martha Ladley, English accents with Richard Spiegal and Leah Hoyer and sharing a reflective moment with Martin Dell

no wonder the empire collapsed

That was one wonky floor. The Romans may have built great roads but their floors leave a lot to be desired!
